Back in the Game!

Hey, it’s only been about six months since last I posted anything here. After spending all of my available nerd energy playing Magic: the Gathering over most of that time, I’ve gotten the itch to run some D&D again, but it has to be in a way that works for our very large and busy family. Magic: the Gathering has been perfect for us, as it satisfies the fantasy cravings while being quick to just pick up and play when I have even a little bit of time with one of the kids.

D&D, on the other hand, required me to spend a good deal of time during the week preparing for the weekend session. These sessions often devolved into contests amongst the children of “who can be the silliest and garner the most attention at the table” to the endless frustration of myself and my father-in-law.

So, something different is in order. We need something that I can just pick up and run when I have a spare hour or two with a couple of the kids, because that seems to be about all I ever get. Basically, it’ll be a blend of the D&D Adventure System Games (Castle Ravenloft, Wrath of Ashardalon, Legend of Drizz’t) and Microlite74.

The system will build on what I started with Hyrulian Adventures (see my last half-dozen or so posts). Hyrulian Adventures, by the way, went well, but our increasingly busy family schedule kept us from having a free Sunday afternoon for a while, and then it became harder and harder for me to get refocused on it enough to start it up again… along with the aforementioned behavioral issues with the children at the gaming table.

I’m currently working on putting it all together. The basic idea is that I’ll be able to use the tile based dungeon-building mechanics from the D&D Adventure System for a good number of quick, short adventures when I don’t have something bigger ready to go.

The setting is going to be something the children are already quite familiar with: the plane of Innistrad, from the recent Magic: the Gathering set. Particularly, the province of Stensia, which is ruled over by powerful vampire clans. This, of course, works pretty well with a lot of what already comes in Castle Ravenloft. It also provides a decent amount of pre-built setting that the children know well; well enough they will be excited when they find certain artifacts they recognize from the cards they play with, or likewise meet certain characters, many of which I will be sure to weave into the story.

All in all, I think it's a good start. I've got a good bit written up to get it all started, and I'll have it posted up here in the next couple of days. It's been a while since I've even cracked open the old D&D tomes, and it feels good perusing these old books for inspiration once again.

  4. Welcome back! I've missed reading your "Hyrulian Adventures" posts, but Innistrad sounds just as cool.

  5. Thanks Simon and Tenkar! I'll be salvaging as much as I can from Hyrulian Adventures for this one. I'm definitely using the "start at 0-level" thing, but am including regular PC levels to acquire. Ideally, with a little extra work up front, I'll have a setting I can use for different groups, be it my kids or my buddies or whoever wants to play, that functions as a living breathing world.

    1. Thanks! I'm pretty deep into Magic these days. I'm certainly not a tournament Spike, as I don't have the time for it (and we don't have many major events in St Louis at all) but I typically have two dedicated Magic nights a week, a Commander night at my house and then a weekend night at the Fantasy Shop, my FLGS, either for draft at FNM or Casual Saturdays. I haven't taken the test, but I'm one of the "de facto" judges in our shop.

    2. EDH/Commander is popular at our shop but I've tried and just can't get into it. I'm pretty sure I've lost any capacity to enjoy Magic outside of a tournament setting. I do, however, think it's a great current Standard environment, and I'm starting to insist we play out the top 8 because I actually enjoy it for once. :)

    3. Standard is totally a wild west right now. WotC has done an excellent job with the current format. So many viable decks! It's a brewer's paradise, really. I also really enjoyed Modern while we were prepping for the last PTQ (although Eggs is obnoxious!). Our FNM is only draft right now, but I think there's been some talk of running Standard as well if there's enough interest. As for Commander, I resisted it for a while, and I was hooked after one game! It's just too much fun to actually be able to use all my old cards again. Seriously, who plays with Dakkon Blackblade? This guy!

    4. I've stayed away from Modern because I've sold out of MtG several times and don't want to reacquire the older cards, and because I assume they'll ban the key piece of anything I decide I like.

I've settled into local ringer status but will probably hit a few PTQs this season. I normally play online quite a bit but just haven't had time recently.

I'm not a brewer and haven't been for many years ... I get my deckbuilding fix in Limited. I generally concentrate on technical play when it comes to 60 card decks.

    5. I can understand being wary of buying into a deck only to have it banned after a couple of months. I was acting more as a coach and playtest partner for my friends, as I can't afford to buy in. We proxied a lot of stuff up.

  7. Glad to hear you're back. Look forward to your "Magic RPG" conversions. Really enjoy your family gaming experiences. A father of 4 myself I love to hear of others who spend time in the hobby together. And pulling in your extended family regularly and on holidays is a lot of fun to read about. Keep it up.

    1. Thanks Brad! I would have had some more content posted last evening, but we had a very long, very epic game of Commander Magic last night that kept me up way past my bedtime lol. I'm looking forward to getting this Innistrad D&D game put together though! There will be plenty of reports as we get into it.
